A malva-rosa é uma planta herbácea e bienal, conhecida pelo seu florescimento vistoso e suas propriedades medicinais. Seu porte é alto para uma florífera, atingindo cerca de 1 a 1,5 metros de altura. Suas folhas são cordiformes e lobadas, pubescentes, ásperas, rugosas e verde-claras, que se tornam progressivamente menores em direção ao topo. As flores surgem em espigas fortes, eretas e altas, que dificilmente necessitam de tutor. As características das flores dependem da cultivar, e elas são grandes e podem ser simples ou dobradas, com margens lisas, recortadas ou crespas e em diversas cores, como o rosa, o vermelho, o amarelo, o branco, o violeta e até mesmo o preto, cor muito rara em flores. A floração se estende pelo inverno e primavera.
A malva-rosa é uma florífera muito charmosa, que pode ser utilizada em maciços e como bordadura alta, junto a paredes e muros, combinando especialmente com estilos arquitetônicos coloniais antigos. Apesar de bienal, ela é plantada anualmente, pois perde a beleza no segundo ano. Devido a facilidade de propagação a malva-rosa forma colônias naturalmente com o passar dos anos e não precisará ser replantada a cada outono.
Deve ser cultivada sob sol pleno, em solo fértil, drenável, bem estercado e irrigado periodicamente. Não tolera solos pesados, argilosos, nem encharcamento. Prefere o clima ameno, tolerando o frio subtropical. Multiplica-se facilmente por sementes. As plantas jovens, devem ser protegidas do inverno rigoroso. O beliscamento efetuado nas mudas, reduz o tempo até a floração e estimula a formação de maior número de hastes florais. O florescimento somente ocorrerá no ano seguinte ao plantio.
